I truly hope that this message finds you and your family well. The first day of school for students is Monday, August 29th. There have been many changes here at SMS over the summer.

Please help me welcome the following new staff:

  • Mehera Ortiz - Band teacher
  • Lisa Irwin - office secretary
  • Ann Darby - Administrative secretary
  • Dorothy Triska - 8th grade paraeducator
  • Morgan Devine - 1:1 paraeducator Learning Center
  • Philip Doughty - 8th grade math teacher - Jen Pallanck substitute
  • Kandace Murdock -7th & 8th grade science teacher
  • Tamera Ranney Armelin - Special education teacher - Functional Skills Classroom
  • Kathryn Desrosiers - Assistant Principal

In addition, our school will be implementing a Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system regarding student and staff behavioral expectations. Over the summer our PBIS/Climate Committee has spent many hours organizing the policies, process and specifics of this behavioral/disciplinary system. Our goal is to show our Eagle Pride by being SAFE, demonstrating OWNERSHIP, have a positive ATTITUDE, and being RESPECTFUL in order to become productive and meaningful citizens in an increasingly global society. Our SMS Eagles will S.O.A.R! Stay tuned for more information in upcoming parent meetings that will be scheduled later on in September.

Our new schedule can be located on our website and on the back cover of the student agenda. Each student will receive an agenda/planner during homeroom on Monday. They may use it to keep track of homework assignments, their schedule, their locker combination and PowerSchool access codes, etc. Please ask your child about their agenda/planners when they get home on Monday. Students will be using lockers again this year. No backpacks will be allowed in the classrooms.

Each year the Stafford community of stakeholders takes a survey in the Spring. The results are shared with staff and the community during meetings at the end of the year. Each school sets goals and works collaboratively to improve in the areas that show that there is a need for growth. One area that was clear to us was under the “Stakeholder Feedback GoalSection1: Family Engagement – Table 2” More specifically, “I am aware of academic opportunities available to help my child with their school work.” One of our goals this year is to increase our communication with parents through our PTO, new format for open house (date coming in late September), celebration of students' success, and evenings scheduled to show and celebrate student growth throughout the school year. It is clear that our school can only be successful, thus our students can only be successful if the home to school communication is clear and persistent. Working in collaboration with families and the community, we will educate students in a way that better prepares them for our ever-changing global society.

We have been working hard to bring back the joy and excitement that students, their families, and staff should have when being involved with education and learning. For example, when you visit our building you will immediately see that we have fresh paint in various areas throughout the building. Our staff will welcome everyone with a warm smile and help whatever the reason for your visit. Our website has current and accurate information about our school too. The school supply lists are located under “For Parents” - “Supply Lists.”

Mr. Moccio, the Superintendent of Schools, has sent out information regarding parent access to PowerSchool. It is important that each family updates their demographic data so we can effectively communicate and you can receive my weekly updates and communicate with teachers. Please make sure that you have logged in to PowerSchool. Should you need assistance with this, reach out to Lisa Irwin, our secretary in the main office. Keeping a close eye on your children through the use of PowerSchool can be a powerful tool.

As a reminder there are no cell phones allowed in the middle school. If students bring them to school they may be used on the bus in an appropriate way, but they must be turned off and kept in the locker during the school day. If a student needs to communicate with a parent or guardian during the school day they will go to the main office and call from the phone located on the counter. Mrs. Irwin can assist students that need help. Our job is to keep students safe and limiting access to social media and cell phone use is important at this age.

I am looking forward to working with each of you. Do not hesitate to reach out by phone or by email. We are always here to address your concerns and hear feedback and input from our stakeholders. (We are bringing back our “Cupcake Wars” this year - if you can think of any fun activities, please reach out!)

Have a wonderfully successful start to the new 2022-23 school year!

Susan J. Mike
